About The Workshop

The Theory of Climbing

January 25th, 2026 - February 15th, 2026 // SUNDAYS 9-11AM

Tilted Climbing and Fitness, 1477 Charlotte Rd, North Vancouver, BC V7J 1H1

There comes a time in every climber’s journey when you hit the dreaded plateau of athletic ability. You’ve put in the time, you’ve invested in the gear, but within the confines of your busy life and what is realistic for you when it comes to training, you feel somewhat stuck. What else is there to do to improve as a climber besides more experience and a strict training regiment?

Welcome to The Theory of Climbing, a learning and training program designed for those of us who are strong, but could benefit from understanding the fundamental mechanics and theory behind movement. Hosted at the newest state of the art board climbing gym in North Vancouver, Tilted Climbing and Fitness, The Theory of Climbing will go deep into the why and how of climbing movement. Lessons will focus on giving specific language to movement, challenge students to think outside the box, and, of course, push you physically and mentally to overcome your plateau!

Ready to level up? We are limiting the capacity of this special first-time program to only 10 climbers to give focused attention, so sign up quick!

Format and Curriculum

January 25th, 2026 - February 15th, 2026

  • Class is Sundays, 9-11a, as well as an additional optional (but highly encouraged) lab/projecting time immediately following class to work on what we learned (approximately 60 minutes)
  • Homework will be assigned to be completed outside of class

Week 1 — Language of Climbing Movement and Theories on Angles

Week 2 — Footwork: Evaluating Lower Body Effort through Setting Problems

Week 3 — Core Tension: Observations on Angles and Power

Week 4 — Managing Momentum: Findings on Power and Precision

Who is this program for?

The Theory of Climbing is for women and gender-non-conforming people who climb comfortably at a V4+ (3-4+ Hive hex range) level. Although your climbing level will not hinder you from benefiting from our curriculum, we have focused certain concepts and training for those who are a bit more seasoned in the sport. We will send out a short intake form ahead of the first day of class to learn about your abilities and goals. If you have any specific questions regarding whether this program is right for you, feel free to DM us or shoot us an email at hello@thebadacademy.com!

What is included?

  • 4 x 2 hour classes (Sundays, 9-11a) + supervised lab time
  • Homework assignments to keep you accountable outside of class
  • 1 month of Tilted 24-hour access membership
  • Access to a private Whatsapp group to keep in touch with your classmates and instructor(s)

Who is teaching this course?

Juniper Arrafi (she/her) is locally one of the only women in commercial route setting and a well-known community leader and organizer in climbing. As a seasoned climber and board climbing expert, Juniper has passionately led the climbing community with Van Queer Climbers, working to foster welcoming and uplifting spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks in climbing. Informed by her years of setting and climbing, she wrote the curriculum for the Theory of Climbing to equip more women with the knowledge and language to take up space in conversations about movement and to empower women to explore and expand their physical literacy in the context of climbing.

What is the venue?

Tilted Climbing and Fitness is the newest climbing facility to hit the Vancouver area! Equipped with a wide selection of climbing boards, a bouldering wall, as well as a weight-training area, it is focused on accessibility and flexibility for whatever you might need in your climbing practice. Open 24 hours, Tilted is the perfect venue for our first run of The Theory of Climbing and only a short 10 minute walk from Phibbs Exchange. We are so excited to welcome you to this space.
