There comes a time in every climber’s journey when you hit the dreaded plateau of athletic ability. You’ve put in the time, you’ve invested in the gear, but within the confines of your busy life and what is realistic for you when it comes to training, you feel somewhat stuck. What else is there to do to improve as a climber besides more experience and a strict training regiment?
Welcome to The Theory of Climbing, a learning and training program designed for those of us who are strong, but could benefit from understanding the fundamental mechanics and theory behind movement. Hosted at the newest state of the art board climbing gym in North Vancouver, Tilted Climbing and Fitness, The Theory of Climbing will go deep into the why and how of climbing movement. Lessons will focus on giving specific language to movement, challenge students to think outside the box, and, of course, push you physically and mentally to overcome your plateau!
Ready to level up? We are limiting the capacity of this special first-time program to only 10 climbers to give focused attention, so sign up quick!
January 25th, 2026 - February 15th, 2026
Week 1 — Language of Climbing Movement and Theories on Angles
Week 2 — Footwork: Evaluating Lower Body Effort through Setting Problems
Week 3 — Core Tension: Observations on Angles and Power
Week 4 — Managing Momentum: Findings on Power and Precision
The Theory of Climbing is for women and gender-non-conforming people who climb comfortably at a V4+ (3-4+ Hive hex range) level. Although your climbing level will not hinder you from benefiting from our curriculum, we have focused certain concepts and training for those who are a bit more seasoned in the sport. We will send out a short intake form ahead of the first day of class to learn about your abilities and goals. If you have any specific questions regarding whether this program is right for you, feel free to DM us or shoot us an email at hello@thebadacademy.com!

Juniper Arrafi (she/her) is locally one of the only women in commercial route setting and a well-known community leader and organizer in climbing. As a seasoned climber and board climbing expert, Juniper has passionately led the climbing community with Van Queer Climbers, working to foster welcoming and uplifting spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks in climbing. Informed by her years of setting and climbing, she wrote the curriculum for the Theory of Climbing to equip more women with the knowledge and language to take up space in conversations about movement and to empower women to explore and expand their physical literacy in the context of climbing.
