About The Workshop

BIKE TOURING 101 // SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 29TH, 2024 - 7:30P

(Not Monday! Apologies for the confusion)

Step 1: You know how to ride a bike.

Step 2: You love riding your bike.

Step 3: You want to go further on your bike.

Have you considered bike touring? It’s something you have always thought you might do, but eek! It’s intimidating! So many unanswered questions, and so many things to think about!

What makes a good touring bike? Can you just use your own road bike? Where do you start when it comes to choosing a location or route? What gear do you need? What are the best brands? What do you pack?! How do you make sure you’re prepared for an emergency? How do you stay safe?

You asked for this workshop and now, we’re delivering! In partnership with Arc’teryx Burrard and Sidesaddle Bikes, we’re so excited to announce a brand new workshop: Bike Touring 101! We have bike touring expert and self-described bike nerd, Jo Bleecker coming to tell you everything you need to know about how to get started on your next new adventure with your trusty steed.

At Bad Academy, we pride ourselves on creating non-intimidating and safe spaces for women and gender-non-conforming people to come together to learn and, more importantly, have fun! Come expand your mind with other like-minded Baddies in a place where asking a million questions is not only welcome, but encouraged :)

This event is intimate with limited spots and we’ll have snacks, beverages, goody bags (that include a handy multi-tool that equals the value of $26!), and a dope Arc’teryx raffle!

About The Instructor(s)

Andrea Smith opened Sidesaddle Bikes in 2015 as the first explicitly women-focused bike shop in Canada after noticing many retail shops are still decidedly male-focused, with maybe a small section in the corner dedicated to women’s products. “There are some commonalities to women’s experiences, and I think the industry could do a much better job of meeting the needs that women do have. Women tend to combine multiple trips into one, you’re picking your kid up at daycare and you’re carrying a purse and briefcase but it’s raining on you and you need gear that can help you do all of that.”

Our awesome workshop will be taught by Johanna who has been involved in the bike industry for 8 years as a mechanic, educator, and advocate. She is currently a staff mechanic at Sidesaddle Bikes as well as a board member for Our Community Bikes and a Kickstand volunteer.
