Art Collection 101

March 6th, 2026 (Friday) 5:30 - 7pm
Vancouver Art Gallery

Bad Artist Club and The Bad Academy have teamed up with Art Rental & Sales at the Vancouver Art Gallery to throw down a no gatekeeping, no pretension, practical seminar to help creators and appreciators step into the world of art collecting and rentals with confidence. This session is all about democratizing art access and ownership. Great art CAN be accessible. You will:

  • Learn strategies for building an art collection on a budget. Including renting vs buying, and smart ways to curate meaningful pieces under $1,000.
  • For artists, navigate how to submit your work to Art Rental & Sales, a not-for-profit program run by the Vancouver Art Gallery that supports emerging and mid-career BC artists through a juried platform.
  • Discover how film, interior designers, and other creative industries use Art Rental & Sales for copyright-cleared pieces and how you could be part of that ecosystem.
  • Connect with fellow artists, collectors, creative professionals, and industry folks in a supportive, no-bull environment built around accessibility and community.

Whether you’re an artist ready to submit work, a cinematographer or designer looking for rights-cleared art for your next project, or someone who wants to start their own art collection without breaking the bank, we’ve got just over an hour to give you the roadmap there.

Please note, this event will be occurring on a Free First Friday at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Through the generous support of BMO, the Gallery offers complimentary admission from 4 to 8 PM on the first Friday of every month. If you would like to visit the Gallery exhibitions prior to or after the program, please reserve your spot in advance to guarantee entry. Registration opens on Monday, February 9th and spaces book out quickly. More information here!

DO YOU HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST TO ATTEND?

Nope! You just have to have an interest in art! If you are an artist, this is a great opportunity to learn more about how art rentals and sales work :)

WHY IS THE ADMISSION PRICE TIERED?

Our club is all about making art accessible for everyone. We have operational costs to cover, but otherwise, we do not make any profit off of the programs and events we produce. If you are able to donate more money for your admission, we would be so appreciative. The extra budget helps us run the club, buy art supplies, and keeps our community alive! Thank you x

Refund Policy: Tickets are transferable, but unfortunately not refundable at The Bad Academy. We're a crazy small organization and operate on razor-thin margins, and as much as we'd like to account for life getting in the way, we have been burned too many times by no-shows, and last-minute refund requests etc. If you'd like to transfer your ticket to a friend, please email us at hello@thebadacademy.com with the name and email of the person taking your place, and we'll make sure to make the appropriate changes!
